Active Community Strategy for Longview
Congratulations on the selection of Longview as one of the ten Alberta communities chosen to receive
support to develop an Active Community Strategy. The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) welcomes the opportunity to work with your community leaders to enhance quality of life, and healthy living through this initiative. Financial support for the Active Community Strategies is provided by the Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund through Alberta Health Services.
As you are aware volunteers and not‐for‐profit groups in Longview have been engaged for over
three years, developing a more active, creative, engaged (ACE) community. ARPA is thrilled to see the
success that Longview has achieved engaging citizens in greater physical activity opportunities both indoors and out! The Active Community Strategy process will further this work by focusing more specifically on a plan to articulate values, goals and collaboration that is intended to get more people, more active, more often!
The development of an Active Community Strategy ties directly with the ACE Communities work and will help Longview plan for and implement a local strategy with ties in the region. I would like to acknowledge Michele and Tony Geistlinger and the ARC Society who submit the application to secure the funding for this next step of the ACE process. These two are leaders not only in their community but have helped to mentor and encourage other communities. We look forward to working with them (and others in Longview) over the next eight months. The outcomes will be better defined goals, an action plan, and greater sustainability toward an active Longview!
I want to commend council on their support of this grassroots initiative and encourage the partnership between the town, citizens and individuals that will be involved in this process. If you would like any further information regarding this exciting initiative please contact the local leaders mentioned above or Janet Naclia, Program Manager with the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, at [email protected] .
Sincerely,
Dan Pagely

Here's your chance to make your opinion count!
The Longview A R C Society needs Public Input to help Formulate an Active Community Strategy for Longview. The A R C applied last summer for a new program from Alberta Recreation and Parks Association funded by the Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund through Alberta Health Services.. Once again we were lucky to be chosen as one of ten groups throughout Alberta charged with developing an Active Community Strategy for their respective communities. The award comes with $10,000 seed money for kick-starting our next healthy living initiative. We have reviewed the Village Municipal Sustainability Plan as well as the very comprehensive Community Scanning Tool results completed in February 2010 shortly after the “Ignite” tour.
It is quite amazing to see the number of wishes and needs what has been accomplished off of both of those documents in the past three years. There were also a number of items listed which we have not tackled yet that would fit nicely with the healthy active life style that our funders are hoping to promote in an effort to reduce avoidable health issues like cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and many more.
Our task is not just what project we decide on but creating a policy of sorts reflecting the active lifestyle we want to create, promote, support and sustain. We hope to influence both our council, the M.D. council, Eden Valley and our neighbours to the north to develop a written policy of their own reflecting their commitment to promoting and supporting healthy living activities for our communities. Upon doing our initial research we discovered that no such written policy exists that we could find.
We are asking you to give it some thought as to things you would like to see in Longview which could help keep us on the road to being fit and healthy. What would you like to see in such a policy? What do we want to achieve for our health in the next 6 months, 1 year, 5 years out. An example of the Provincial Policy ie: A Recreation, Active Living and Sport Policy is: Vision: Albertans enjoy a high quality of life, improved health, strong communities and personal fulfilment through recreation, active living and sport.
We are holding an open house meeting at Longview Community Hall on Thursday, February 7th from 7 to 9 PM. We will share some info with you about the Active Community Strategy program and give you a chance to write down your suggestions for the strategy for us to compile and review. If you are unable to attend please write your ideas down and leave them at the village office for us to collect or send an email to [email protected] .
As you are aware since 2010 Longview has a state of the art junior and senior playground, 13 pieces of outdoor exercise equipment, concrete pad in rink, beautiful new boards, skate park equipment, Veteran’s Memorial, Legacy Serenity Garden, beautiful Christmas lights on main street and a multitude of new benches, picnic tables and litter receptacles in Centennial park in an effort to make it more inviting to residents. All of these were identified as needs only 3 short years ago. There was an exercise program which ran all summer in the park called GO ME!! For Go Out Move and Exercise. All ages and abilities were welcome and it was free of charge thanks to generous funding from Alberta Sport Recreation Parks and Wild Life Foundation. In case you are not aware we continue to meet throughout the winter in the community hall. Please come and join us as we laugh our way to fitness. Adults Mon 6-7 pm Wed 6:15-7:15 pm and Seniors Tues/Thursday 10-11 am. If you would like to look at all of the 2010 scanning tool results go to our website at http://longviewaceprojects.weebly.com/
One identified need mentioned repeatedly in the scanning tool and in the Village MSP was a walking trail which would definitely fit the active lifestyle parameter that ARPA is hoping to promote and may well be our identified project. Please give this subject some thought and we hope to see you on the 7th!
